Star Scientific Inc. the tobacco company once based in Petersburg is trying to make safe tobacco products, but are there any safe tobacco products?
The small company has now come up with products that are called lozenges, which dissolve in the mouth when a person eats them. The company is now waiting for approval from the FDA to start selling and marketing the product. FDA will give approval only on the condition if lozenges are less harmful than cigarettes.
Now, there are two sides of this picture, one from the people who say that tobacco consumed in any form is always harmful; and the second, which comes from the people, who say that smokeless tobacco and e-cigarettes are less harmful.
FDA has the authority to evaluate all the tobacco products when they are made. Without the approval of FDA, the products cannot be launched in the market. Once launched, FDA has no authority to regulate the tobacco products.
All the tobacco companies are now waiting to see, how FDA deals with the matter. The companies also want to sell different products as the demand for cigarettes is continuously decreasing mainly because of increasing tax, smoking bans and health concerns.
The Star Scientific says that the products that they have made have less amount of toxins in them, the level carcinogens in these tablet is also extremely low.
The FDA has not yet made any strict guidelines for the smokeless tobacco products but according to some researchers, some of the smokeless tobacco products are 90% less harmful when compared to cigarettes or cigars.
The reaction of the people to lozenges is still not certain, as these tablets contain very low amount of tobacco, far less than needed to satisfy a regular smoker. Further, some people just smoker for the sake of fashion, they might not shift to the tablets.
