Pall Mall brand was launched in 1899 by Butler & Butler Company. It was manufactured as a premium brand for the upper class, hence the name Pall Mall - an upscale street in London's West End.

In 1907 the Butler & Butler Company together with the brand was acquired by the American Tobacco Company. At that time Pall Mall was the test subject for the company's cigarette design innovations: 85 mm length (king size and today's standard length) and a new cigarette filling method designed to make smoking easier for a throat.

In the 1960's Pall Malls were on the peak of their popularity being the best selling brand in America. In those years American Tobacco continued being innovative coming up with a longer 100 mm cigarette (which later became a standard for long cigarettes). In 1966, however, Winstone overthrew Palmalls with its slogan "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should".

Through a series of mergers and acuisitions, Pall Mall was owned and distributed by R.J. Reynolds in the US. British American Tobacco produces and sells Pall Malls outside US.
