Obama's Smokeless Moscow Visit

Recently president Obama made his first official visit to Moscow, Russia. Besides many other issues that he had in Moscow, he also had to fight the urge of smoking. The journalists of Russia made a slogan for him “we have them, so smoke them when you are here”. But the US president refrained from smoking in Russia; instead, he promoted smoking free life style.

According to the statistics, Russia has a very high rate of smokers and is also known as smoker’s paradise. In Russia, there are no smoking bans and the taxes on cigarettes are so low that smoking is easily available to anyone. Moreover, Russia has the finest and the most diverse variety of cigarettes in the world.

Russian times made many offers to president Obama to smoke a cigarette; they said that Russia is full of smoker who would be willing to give him a cigarette. They tempted him by telling that a cigarette pack is around $1. However, no body has seen the president smoking in Russia. Obama says that he does not smoke when he is with his family, specially his underage daughters, and they were with him on this tour.

In a conference, Barack Obama even said that he advised the president of Russian federation on how they can decrease the rate of smoking and smokers in Russia.

He said that it is important for people to understand that what a healthy life style is and that cigarettes are not supportive to healthy living. He further said that just changing the legislation would not do any good; the attitude of the people needs to be changed.

Though Obama did not try to change the attitude of people in US, instead, he brought legislation that severely banned flavored cigarettes and prohibited smoking at many places; he banned any promotions of the tobacco companies.
