History
The company was established in 1847 by Philip Morris who opened a shop on Bond Street, London and sold tobacco and cigarettes. After Morris's death his wife and brother took over the family business making it public in 1881.
The company grew and evolved over the years. In 1894 the founding family lost control over Philip Morris & Co. In 1919 the company famous logo was introduced and also the company itself was acquired by American Stockholders. It was incorporated in Virginia and in 1924 Philip Morris & Co., Ltd., Inc manufactured cigarettes in Richmond, Virginia. The same year the company introduces a new brand – Marlboro.
For thirty years Marlboro had been a truly American brand, but in 1957 it was first produced outside the US – in Switzerland. From that point on Philip Morris &Co. evolved into PMI around the globe winning new markets, acquiring new manufacturing facilities and expending its client base and brands.
