Initially Marlboros were advertised as women’s cigarettes with a slogan “Mild as May”. And up until World War II they were sold as such. During the war, however, other bands were created and supplied to the soldiers. In 1955 the first filtered Marlboros appeared on the market and only short years after the most famous Philip Morris campaign emerged – the Marlboro County. The campaign featured rugged cowboys, Marlboro Men, and a slogan “Come to where the flavor is… come to the Marlboro County”. The music for this nation-wide (and world –wide) campaign were taken from the insanely famous movie The Magnificent Seven.
From that moment on and to this day, Marlboro is considered to be really manly thanks to the advertising campaign created about 50 years ago. Over these years, however, Marlboro manufacturer didn’t rest on their laurels developing Marlboro Lights, Ultra Lights which were later relabeled to Gold and Silver respectively.
Also since 1972 Marlboro has been sponsoring various motor races, primarily Formula One teams: McLaren, Ferrari. The brand has also sponsored rallies and motorbikes races. Although in recent years the European Union prohibited cigarettes brands from displaying their logos on Formula One cars.
