Lucky Strike brand was introduced in 1871 by R.A. Patterson first as chewing tobacco and later as cigarettes. In 1905 the brand was acquired by the American Tobacco Company (ATC) and became a head-to-head competitor with RJR's Camel.

Luckies' famous slogan "It's Toasted" first appeared in 1917 as well as the "Lucky Strikes means fine tobacco" (L.S.M.F.T.) message on the pack. Lucky Strike brand was hugely popular in the 1920s involved in various radio and music programs. In 1928 famous bandleader and vaudeville producer B.A. Rolf was recording and performing as "B.A. Rolf and his Lucky Strike Orchestra".

In 1935 ATC sponsors Your Hit Parade show with tobacco auctioneer Lee Aubrey Riggs. Due to this weekly radio show the brand's popularity skyrocketed; and the brand remained popular for the next quarter of a century. At that time Hollywood actors were often enough endorsers of Lucky Strike cigarettes, even the "King of Hollywood" Douglas Fairbanks gave his testimonials as to the Luckies' flavor.

In 1942 the Lucky Strike's traditionally green package changed color and wore white. The purpose of this change was to modernize the brand making it more appealing to women-smokers (who apparently didn't fancy green).

In the 1960s, ATC introduced filtered regular and menthol Luckies. The latter were called Lucky Strikes Green, referring to their menthol ingredient and not the color of the package.

As years went buy Lucky Strike popularity faded until in 2006 ATC had to discontinue various types of this brand leaving only limited production of unfiltered Luckies for a small customer base.

Outside the US, however, Lucky Strike Brand still exists, manufactured by British American Tobacco. Luckies are especially popular in Germany, Spain, Japan, France and Argentina.
