Flavored Tabacco Legislation
MONTREAL — Some of the tobacco companies are being blamed or ignoring a legislation that was announced by Stephen Harper, the legislation which was announced so that the kids are kept away from flavored cigarettes.
Some of the importers of flavored cigarillos have changed their size and shape a bit, so that they can bring them in the country. A Lawyer calls it an open attempt to elude a legislation.
In 2008, prime minister harper promised that he will surely make some strategy against the marketing practices of tobacco that attract young people to smoking. His promise was the effect to which the result was a law that defines little cigars as anything which has a weight less than 1.4 grams, and that uses a cigarette filter.
Now the manufacturers add a little more weight to the little cigars and do not use the cigarette filter and the importing companies claim their products to legal because they are qualified as little cigars according to the law definition.
Now these little cigars are sold in packs, whereas previously they were sold in colored tubes individually.
The authorities say that it is completely unacceptable to put flavor to any tobacco product as flavor make it easier to smoke and better in taste. The authorities are also concerned that these cigar packs have warning only on one side as compared to the cigarette packs that have warnings typed on both sides of the pack.
Luc Martial, an executive of Casa Cubana, which is a major tobacco importer, says that there is not proof that flavored tobacco compels the young people to consume it. He say it if were the case, the government could have banned flavored cigars instead of little cigars.
Martial says that it is ridiculous if someone says that they flavored tobacco products target kids, he says that it is just a variation created for the smokers. He agrees to the fact that young people are smoking cigarillos but he says that their portion is very low.
