European Commission and Imperial Tobacco sign an agreement
Last week the European Commission signed an agreement with the Imperial Tobacco Limited (ITL). The agreement is about tracing the illegal sales and trade of tobacco items. According to the signed agreement, both of them will work in collaboration to fight against illegal imports.
According to a report, EU loses estimated 10 billion euro and member states because of the illegally imported cigarettes, unpaid taxes and counterfeit cigarettes. The illegal trade of cigarettes commonly results in activities that are more sinister, the amount collect from the illicit sales is used for other unfair means, for example terrorism. These are some of the reasons, because which EU and member states have made a platform to fight with the illegal trading of tobacco.
Over the past years, EU has worked very hard, but it has not been able to fight with contraband successfully. EU, therefore has stepped forward in its battle, it has combined with member states and third world countries. Both the authorities in the agreement believe that their step will surely do a lot good to the harm that is caused to the individuals and the state from illegal trading of tobacco.
Another reason for the merger of the two authorities to fight contraband is the protection of the young people. The authorities believe that illegally traded cigarettes are sold unrecorded and at cheap rates, which makes them available to the youngsters.
The agreement has introduced new provision that will help the law enforcement agencies to be more effective on the criminals. ITL has further committed that it will be more careful and more meticulous in checking the customers and tracing the packaging, further it will also support the battle to the maximum ability.
The strategies and techniques decided by the collaboration are compliant to the anti-contraband proviso of the World Health Organization on tobacco control.
