FDA reported that it sent some manufacturers of e-cigs warning letters. Specifically the letters were to five companies that made components for plastic and other devices that heat nicotine solution to make the vapor, which are inhaled by the smokers.
According to FDA, the reason for sending the letter is that the companies are violating many claims and laws, which include federal food, and drug and cosmetic act. Further, the FDA claims that they have poor manufacturing practices.
The agency said that one of the five companies is even selling weight loss and erectile dysfunction drugs that can be used in e-cigs, which is completely against the rules. FDA has asked them to report how they will fix these violations, giving them an ultimatum of 15 days.
The companies receiving warning letters are:
1. E-Cigarette Direct LLC of Colorado;
2. Ruyan America Inc. in Minneapolis;
3. Florida-based Gamucci America;
4. Wisconsin-based Johnson Creek Enterprises LLC.
5. Las Vegas-based E-Cig Technology Inc.
FDA has said that these actions are not against the companies that manufacture e-cigs and they do not wish to ban e-cigs.
The president of Ruyan America has said that there company has not manufactured any nicotine product for more than a year and that they do manufacture cartridges that have an ingredient, which provides relief to the withdrawal symptoms. They say that they will address FDA’s letter.
Now it has become a fight that whether the electronic cigarettes are actually good for health or not. The officials are still finding ways how these cigarettes should be regulated.
FDA claims that it has the complete right to regulate e-cigs and decide how they will be regulated, while some of the sellers say that electronic cigarettes are tobacco products and they should be regulated just like tobacco.
E-cigarettes are spreading very quickly getting more than 20,000 to 30,000 new e-smokers every week.
