Camel is almost a hundred years old. It was the first pre-packed nationally marketed brand created by R.J. Reynolds. The blend and the package design has changed over the years, the most recent blend consists of Oriental (Turkish) and Virginia tobacco.
Before 1913 most smokers preferred to roll their own cigarettes, so when R.J. Reynolds came with the idea of packaged cigarettes it was considered not that smart or profitable. But Reynolds designed this new brand to look similarly to the "hip" (then) Egyptian cigarettes naming it Camel (because he used Turkish paper). Reynolds, by the way, proved the skeptics wrong by lowering cigarette price and selling about four million packs.
