In 1913 R.J. Reynolds tobacco company introduced to the United States its first nation-wide popular cigarette – Camel. Moreover, the company presented almost every packaging standard in the US: 20-cigarette pack (1913), 10-pack carton (1915) and water-proof cellophane wrapper (1931) as well as cork-tipped filter (1936).
On the business level from 1918 on, the company expended acquiring smaller tobacco companies and expending its distribution markets. Along with physical expansion RJR also worked towards increasing its manufacturing capacity beginning construction on existing factories.
In the following years the company introduced different national brands:
Raleigh (1928)
KOOL(1933) – the first US menthol cigarette
Viceroy (1936) the first brand with cork-tip filter
Winston (1954) very successful on the market
Salem (1956) – the first filtered menthol cigarette
Belair (1960)
Doral (1969)
Barclay (1980) was introduced as low-tar brand
Capri (1987) – first stylish super-slim cigarette brand
Even in World War II American soldiers smoked Camel remaining loyal to this great brand upon their return home.
In the following years the company underwent a series of mergers and acquisitions and decompositions until it reached the current structure and status of one of the leading tobacco companies in the world.
